Cartoon Me

Yup, for those of you who are familiar with what I look like, that’s me alright.

Quite a striking visage, don’t you think?

Thanks to the help of one my good, yet wishes to remain anonymous, friends I was able to get myself drawn in a very anime-like way. For this DS106 assignment, Cartoon You, one was tasked with transforming one’s self into a cartoon character through the use of drawing and photo manipulation to obtain the desired cartoon like effects.

I’m not sure if my photo is exactly like the typical American cartoon, instead, it has the more definite Japanese anime style to it. To complete this assignment, all I did was take a photo of the picture that was drawn, uploaded the picture and opened it in Photoshop, did some cropping, and applied various filters and changed the lighting of photo until I got what I liked.

We were also encouraged in the original post to write a comic-like story to go with our picture if we are able to think of one, but, sadly, I cannot think of anything dramatic enough to go with this picture (that doesn’t have to deal with a floating head).

So, let me know what you think of this cartoon me in the comments below. All your replies and comments are much appreciated. If you have any questions regarding photoshop, I can try to help you out with that as well.

Until next time!

Living Freely

For my next DS106 assignment, Design the Cover of Your Autobiography, I chose to work with my own photograph (taken in Yokohama), as an autobiography is something of a personal matter, fiction or not.

This picture may seem quite spartan, however, the subtle meaning it has beat out other images in my collection that had much more action going on inside them. While I feel my life has been quite exciting since I came to Japan, I hoped that by gazing on this photo you get the sense of freedom that I have felt in my life, in contrast to a photograph of something that I had actually done.

You may be asking: Why is that? Wouldn’t it be more interesting the other way around?

Words and pictures are very similar, so it is necessary that in order to transmit the concept and feeling that I have in my mind to you, the reader, it is important that my picture is something that everyone who sees it can relate too. How many times can you recall looking up into the sky seeing birds pass above you?

I’m sure many of you can think of at least a couple instances where that has happened. Do you remember any thoughts or feelings of wanting to fly away, to be free like those birds you saw passing overhead into the horizon?

Again, I can almost positively say that everyone at some point in their life wanted to defy gravity, to fly away from the earth, to be unrestricted by borders or boundaries.

This picture, I hope, can help transmit that feeling of freedom more than anything. The text, as you may notice, is merely supplemental in getting you, the viewer of the image, to think towards that end.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my picture of what my autobiography cover would look like.

Please feel free to comment below and tell me what you think! I’d love to know if you ever dreamed of flying away to somewhere new before, as well!

Thank you!

Pinocchio Paradox

What you see above is my latest creation for the DS106 Album Cover assignment. The Band’s name, Pinocchio Paradox, is seemingly a hardcore heavy metal music band that is rectifying the music scene with its new crazy style. Here are a list of the songs on their first CD “Life’s Not the Movies.”

1. The Reveler of Lies
2. Get sawed
3. Geppetto’s Wail
4. Angel’s Requiem
5. In the belly of the whale
6. Endless fire
7. Wooden Cage
8. Finally Real

To make this picture, I simply assembled the necessary information.

The quote was originally: “Some relationships start with fights… But, usually only in romantic comedies. Life’s not the movies.” Takayuki Ikkaku, Arisa Hosaka and Toshihiro Kawabata, Animal Crossing: Wild World, 2005

The picture and article name were both very easy to get from Flickr and Wikipedia after simply copying the hyperlink from the assignment into my address bar. and then neatly compiled it together in photoshop. The link for the original source of my photo can be found here and the Wikipedia page entry can be found here as well. Possibly the hardest part of this assignment was choosing the band name and whether or not to alter the image for greater effect. I felt that since I was going for a more hardcore look, my random picture’s landscape was quite well suited for it. I hope you agree. Also, I capitalized the letters in the album cover to kind of say “I no I rox”, or in other words, “I know I rock”. I thought maybe that this would enhance the bands integrity.

Let me know what you think below!

Your Nex-Burger

As one of my main topics of discussion, food, or in particular hamburgers, is evolving as rapidly as technology is. Decades back, we had the introduction of GM crops, or Genetically Modified crops. In more recent developments, scientists have even been able to create burgers in the lab out of things like fecal matter and stem cells.
A recent article in BBC got me thinking about food again, after it mentioned that scientists reached a breakthrough point with creating meat from stem cells in the lab. The article itself mentions that making meat this way is indeed the most energy efficient. As it takes 100g of vegetable protein to produce 15g of animal protein giving current meat production levels only a 15% efficiency rate. In the lab grown method, however, efficiency is increased to 50% and is a more eco-friendly way of meeting the food production needs for the earth’s ever growing population.
The downside to this method at the moment is that there really is no way of mass producing the meat right now. The fact that each burger costs around $200,000 dollars to make definitely puts a hamper on early sales as well.
I’ve been meaning to pose this question to my general(ly forced) readers, so let me not waste any more time in doing so.

Would you eat any type of meat that is grown purely “in the lab”? Where do you draw the line regarding food? Are you already an “organic only” person? Or are you the type that if it tastes good, it’s okay?

You can answer the questions if you want, or just let me know what you think of this whole meat growing business in general or anything you want to say.

Thanks for reading! ^_^

Time

Time.

When I was just a child growing up, it seemed as though time crawled by. A single day seemed forever, and completion of a school year marked the end of an eternity.

During middle school and high school, things still passed by slowly. Everyday wasn’t a perpetual interlude as it was in the previous stage of my life; however, it still went by all too grudgingly.

After graduation from high school and making that move in to college, it seems as though time was put on fast forward. Even now, in my fourth year of college, I can clearly remember my early freshman days as vividly as if they were yesterday’s memories. Now, instead of having to kill time daily, I’m wishing there were more hours in the day.
Seriously! There should be more. I mean, look at all the other planets. Most of them have days that entirely eclipse our own earth’s rotation period. Considering how much work I have ahead of me, I’m kind of jealous of Venus’ day length right now. It has a 243 earth-day day. Heck, its year is shorter than its day at only 224 earth days. Imagine that! If someone told you that you had to hand a report in tomorrow or do a presentation, you wouldn’t have to worry about it at all. Granted, I’m sure everyone would still do it at the last possible minute like they always do, but hey, at least there’s some extra time to kill.

Anyway, all the work, papers, and other school assignments that I have piled on my to-do-list have me wishing occasionally that there were a couple extra hours in the day.
I’m there are some of you out there who feel the same, so let me know what planet you would need to live on to get your work done in the comments box below.

Pipe Dream

Pipe Dream

“When the storm surged and their pipe sanctuary was crushed, all hoped seemed to be lost for Stick Figure Person 1 and Stick Figure Person 2. Not only did their pipe of hope get destroyed but Stick Figure Person 2 was plunged into a most perilous situation! As the situation progresses, will Stick Figure Person 1 be able to save Stick Figure Person 2? Or will Stick Figure Person 2 be sent to a cold wet grave at the hands of merciless fate?”

Tune in next time to find out!

Or better yet make your own ending! =P

This is my finished DS106 assignment for Stick Figures and Sticky Situations. I hope you enjoyed it! The plot I tried to come up with is really random, but you’re welcome to come up with your own ending in the comments section if you want!

Just for your information, I used Photoshop to put in these stick figures using the paint brush and that’s pretty much it!

Once again, I hope you enjoyed it! Let me know what you think! =)

Flower Power III

Hey! It really is a flower, right?

If that’s what you thought, then I am pleased to answer that this is, indeed, a flower.

Not to mention a very provocative looking one at that!

By now, I am assuming you’re probably wondering what the name of this flower is.

Unluckily for me, I was a bit curious, too, but had no idea what it was.

Luckily for you, I was able to do some comparisons through Google Images and research in Wikipedia to determine what precisely this thing is. Or, at the very least, I was able to determine what this flower might be.

So before all the built up suspense kills you, let me share with you the fruits of my labor. This flower is humbly named the Pink Anthurium or, if you wish, you may also call it the “Flamingo Flower” or “Boy Flower”.

Now, I’m guessing it’s called the “Flamingo Flower” since it comes in a variety of colors and one of which, much like the one in my picture, is (flamingo) pink. So, therefore, it must be called the “Boy Flower” because of the…wait a minute. It says here that both names refer to the structure of the spathe and spadix.

Ahh, should of known that one all along.

For the uninitiated into the world of botany (or those who refuse to click on the links) let me give you a quick and simple definition of the two terms. The spathe is that petal thingy around the spadix. The spadix being the protruding rod shaped pointy thing in center. (Thingy is such a useful word…)

So yeah, you’ll probably want to be clicking on those links right about now.

Anyway, there’s tons of stuff to say about these flowers, but instead of summarizing everything right here, I’m instead going to recommend reading the Wikipedia page about them if you’re interested in learning more.

I hope you enjoyed my picture, and had at least a little fun reading my post. Please tell me what you think of my picture, and as always, feel free to leave a comment.

Thanks for reading! =)

*Notice* I actually ended up writing and rewriting this post a total of three times, definitely not out of choice. I had to do it out of the fact that whenever I chose to save the completed post or submit it, my browser gave me an error message and sent me back to the very beginning of my post. WordPress didn’t even auto save my work once after an hour of typing so now I’m pretty tired and extremely irritated that I had to type this post in Microsoft word to ensure it saves/submits properly. Sorry for the lack of more detailed information. I hope you don’t mind, but I don’t think I can write everything again and stay sane tonight. Thanks for reading this too, I feel slightly better after typing this. 笑笑笑。*End of notice*`
